General Information
Canyon Rim Academy is a public charter school located at 3005 S. 2900 E. near the mouth of Parley’s Canyon. Canyon Rim Academy will serve 525 students in grades K-6, with a target class size of 25 children per grade. Classes begin on August 27th, with school hours from 8:30 AM to 3:15 PM (1:15 PM on Fridays). For a detailed calendar, see School Year and Daily Schedule.
Canyon Rim Academy has a strong academic focus. The curriculum directly aligns with the Utah State Core Curriculum requirements and CRT standards. The USOE requirements are augmented with the Core Knowledge Sequence curriculum by E.D. Hirsch, Jr., a grade-by-grade sequence of specific content guidelines in history, geography, mathematics, science, language arts, and the fine arts. Several other Utah charter schools have implemented the Core Knowledge Sequence with great success.
In addition to Core Knowledge, Canyon Rim Academy has a service-learning emphasis, a program based on the concept of applied learning. Through service with various community partnerships, students are given the opportunity to apply learned concepts directly.
Canyon Rim Academy has a full-time Spanish teacher who will teach Spanish two to three hours per week in grades three through six.
Canyon Rim Academy recognizes that exposure to arts, in all forms, enhances children’s understanding of the world around them and provides another link in learning and self-expression. Complementing the arts components of the Core Knowledge Sequence, each class will have an art parent to assist the classroom teacher with visual arts instruction. Canyon Rim Academy will continue to build partnerships with local arts organizations such as Repertory Dance Theatre, the Salt Lake City Arts Council, and the Utah Opera Company to provide artist-in-residence programs. A music instructor will also provide instrumental music programs for upper grades.
